Dumping the Lag Early
I've looked at some recent video of my swing and noticed that i'm losing the lag into impact. Hitting them ok but just not getting nice compression.
If i specifically focus on trying to delay the hit (or at the range put a hurdle behind the ball that means i can't lose the lag early) then things go pear shaped and i either top it or shank it from the inside dragging the hosel into the ball.
Any ideas or drills that i could work on?
I don't have a good video from the range but i've attached one i took in the back yard without a ball.

Your HANDS are probably doing something other than HOLDING ON.
That's all they do. The LAG is loaded, and the HANDS HOLD ON. They are just "CLAMPS."

Bergsey,
IMO you need to work on your set up. Hoganesque (Five Lessons) overkill with those inverted elbows and rigid arms. Where's the Bandages.
Could I suggest that you adopt a start up position but WITHOUT a club in your hands, just let your arms hang naturally and see where the inside of your elbows are anatomically meant to be.
Now take your grip on the club with your elbows in this correct, relaxed, position and get into your set up mode.
At this point a further, and most important adjustment to your present set up, is needed and that is to bend your right arm whilst keeping your left arm straight.
When you swing the club you should arrive at impact with the same degree of bend in your right arm as you had at set up.
Your problem is not so much a mistiming of release but one of running out of right arm and then flipping at the ball.

Strangely enough that's pretty much how my arms naturally hang, i don't feel any extra tension in them at all.
The thing i do fight though is not getting the right forearm on plane and right arm bent enough at setup. If i do it correctly then it feels like i'm just standing waaayyy too close to the ball....

Can you do a down-the-line with both right arm alignments at set-up?

Yep...had that feeling too initially...but have since gotten used to it.
I found that if I get the forearm on plane at impact fix, then revert to an adjusted address the forearm is close to on plane, and that works best for me.

try starting the hands directly at the ball on the angle from your hands to the ball after you have shifted your weight left. Also make sure you only have 90 degrees of angle between your left arm and clubshaft at the top that makes it easier to increase the lag a little on downswing.

Hard to say from a face on view, but even with a lob wedge, are those clubs too short for you? How tall are you?
It looks to me that you stand very upright and don't have much bend from the hips or knees, which could explain why it looks like the club is too short for you.
Do you have any down the line?
As far as your motion, your upper body/arms move better than most, but your lower body/pivot is quite motionless. Imagine if you were going to try to break down a door with the back of your left shoulder, how your legs would support/flex/respond to that motion. You want a bit of that in your pivot, let those legs/knees/torso get a touch more active.

I'm 186cm so that's around 6 foot 1 in the old money. Irons are half an inch over standard length.
Will post up some down the line snapshots when i get home

another big thing is watch in the clip where your head is at address and how much it raises in the backswing, when you come off the ball like that you have to make up for being farther away from the ball by releasing it early other wise you would top it so just concentrate on staying down throughout your backswing and you should be able to sustain that angle better and hit more crisp shots.
