Did anyone watch Saturday's Match Play on ABC? I was flipping the channel and saw Azinger (I think) demonstrating various swings with an overhead camera. He first demo'd a 'hook swing' then his 'knockdown shot'. The knockdown shot could've been a picture perfect demo of when both arms straighten at low point (ala impact bag drill) with vertical hinging to produce what he termed 'holding off the release'. Or maybe I was just seeing things
In that same broadcast....ABC also did an analysis of Retief Goosen's swing.....geezzz, another "Right Arm Swinger"....geezzzz, the list of right arm swingers is starting to increase....and we're not talking about the players on the end of the money list either.
That analysis came from Ian Baker-Finch....."Retief all right arm....
Azinger did mention that he hits the inside of the ball. He also said tha his clubhead path is inside out, i.e., cross-line to the target line, and indeed, his divot pointed to the right of the target. I've often wondered if any of them actually know that the inside of the ball should be struck.
I saw the overhead demonstrations. Faldo pointed out the clubface pointing along the plane line in the followthrough - horizontal hinge anyone? That was for a draw.
Then for his "knockdown", it almost appeared that he was using a vertical hinge, because the face stays square to the plane line and facing the sky. Probably an angled hinge though. Azinger was saying something about "fully releasing" that shot yet holding off the face. Who knows what that means, but the pictures tell all.
And this is all a great demonstration of the geometry of the circle. Impact, divot, low point, followthrough.
