Brian Watts / Sands of Time

Ten years ago, Brian Watts was at the pinnacle of golf -- The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale Golf Club. At the end of regulation play, he was tied with Mark O'Meara, but lost in the four-hole playoff. The most recent decade has been marked with injury, frustration and perseverence, a story well chronicled by noted golf writer Lorne Rubenstein in Sands of Time, a 4-page article in this week's issue of Golf World (July 11).

LBG Contributor Rob Noel www.robnoelgolfacademy.com is Brian's long-time instructor, and he brought me into the picture in the spring of 2005. Lorne interviewed us both early in his research, and we hopefully paved the way for some of the insights in the article.

Read it last night and was thinking about March 2005 at The Swamp---when you told me Brian had been there the week prior to me! Looks like he wants to make a comeback and hope he pulls it off.

I was a little late getting to my July 12 issue of Golfweek, but when I did, I found another four-page article (Fighting Back, pp. 10-13) featuring Brian Watts. This excellent piece by Jeff Rude includes several quotes from LBG Contributor Rob Noel, Brian's instructor since 1992.

Next month (August 21-24), Rob once again will join the LBG team conducting The Barclays Golf Academy during The Barclays, a $7,000,000 PGA TOUR event and the first of the FedEx Cup Playoff Series.
