In this next holiday week and throughout the coming New Year . . .
If you drink, don't drive. If you drive, don't drink.
First, mind your
own behavior. Plan ahead, if you know you're going to have more 'fun' than the law allows, and make sure you have a designated driver. Finally -- and this is a 'toughie' for most of us --
be there when you see the rules being irresponsibly broken. The drunk will say he is okay, but you know better. Stop him. Or her.
You have a number of alternatives:
Find a sober driver in the drunk's group.
Sit with the drunk another hour. Or two. Food and water will help.
Tell the drunk -- probably a friend, but tonight a friend so obviously drunk that you are concerned -- that you will take him home. Be strong, and insist on it. If that's not possible . . .
Call a cab.
Take the keys.
Do whatever it takes.
For their own sake.
And, for the sake of innocent others.
