The Case Of The Drooping Clubhead

Yoda,
what was so funny? Mike Holder and Steve Snyder have big grins on their faces. Do you remember why they were smiling like that: was it something Homer was saying, or were they just posing for the pic?

Also, why is the clubface so open (or toe down)? Everytime I see this pic, it makes me feel that I should be playing a fade since the clubface seems to want to open on its own (and clubshaft droop).

I'm not sure exactly what we were laughing about -- I seem to remember Homerkept getting tangled in the string during "Start-Up! -- but I can tell youthat despite his scientific demeanor, Homer was fully capable of providingcomic relief. And because it usually came out of the blue, the effect wasexaggerated.

Clarifying your question regarding the Clubface, it is not open. The Hinge Action has aligned it perfectly through the Impact Interval. On theother hand, your description of the Clubhead is accurate, i.e., it is"toe down." This is the result of the dynamic I discussed at lengthin my recent post Why Do The Best Players Play The Stiffest Shafts?

What is happening is that the Center of Gravity of the Clubhead (thescrew Homer imbedded in the middle of the Clubface) is maintaining itsstraight-line relationship with the #3 Pressure Point (where the stringtouches Homer's right forefinger). For proof, starting from that forefinger, simply trace the line (mentally or otherwise) along the string to its point ofattachment at the hosel. Then, extend that "line of force" anotherquarter inch or so, and you will see that it passes precisely through theSweetspot, i.e., the imbedded screw.

All other aspects of the Clubhead, in this case including the shaftlesshosel, must conform to this straight line of Centrifugal Pull. Hence, the"droop" you have described.
