The last of this years World Golf Championships events got underway yesterday at Sheshan International GC in Shanghai, China. With a purse of $7,000,000, no cut and a limited field of 78 players representing 23 countries, this stellar event focuses international attention not only on the great players of the world, but also on the emerging prominence of China on golf's world stage. Qualifiers come to the tournament from the Asian Tour, European Tour, Japan Golf Tour, PGA TOUR, PGA TOUR of Australasia and the Sunshine Tour, and also, elite Chinese players qualifying through the China Golf Association.
Only five players in the field were multiple winners this year on the PGA TOUR. Among these few is
Brian Gay, who opened with 69 (-3) and is currently T-13.
